Wetherby U17s stormed back from a poor start to clinch the RFU North Division Junior Colts Cup 34-22 over Driffield on Sunday.
The Wetherby team recovered from a 12-point deficit to win a hard-fought game against their Yorkshire rivals.
Driffield powered out of the blocks to race into a 12-0 lead after 15 minutes.
However, just before the break, Wetherby’s Colts brought themselves within a score’s difference with Harry Cleary’s try, converted by Billy Cale.
After the restart, Wetherby were much the better team and second row Harry Johnson charged over after excellent work by the backs.
Shortly after, Cale returned the ball from a restart and ran half the length of the pitch for another try.
With the forwards’ work improving, number eight Jack Barthorpe then powered through and crossed the line for a converted try.
Driffield found their energy again and their forwards drove over the Wetherby line for a converted try. But Wetherby’s fitness in the latter stages enabled them to pull ahead with second tries for Cale and Cleary.
Driffield fought hard to the end, and scored a final try in the dying seconds.
Wetherby now face a wait to see who they will face in the national semi-finals.
