Wetherby RUFC did their promotion hopes no harm as they pulled off an important 13-10 win over fellow high-fliers Halifax on Saturday.
The fifth-placed Reds moved within 12 points of the Yorkshire Four top two.
Wetherby headed into the match with ‘Fax two places above them in the table.
And the first score went to the Reds when Connor Sheridan intercepted a Halifax move and ran in from more than 50 metres.
The hosts squared matters with a try by capitalising on a Wetherby mistake but Alex Dus restored the Reds lead with a well-taken penalty.
The tireless Nick Olte then won the match in the second-half when he collared the Halifax scrum half at a lineout, and picked up the loose ball to score.
But halifax were not finished and scored a try following another Wetherby error.
The hosts then piled on pressure in the final minutes but the excellent Wetherby defence held out.
Wetherby entertain York RI in a league game on Saturday at Grange Park (2.15pm)
Meanwhile. a last-gasp try denied Wetherby Crusaders victory as they lost 22-17 to Old Modernians in Central/North District Merit Table.
Tries from Geoff Brown, Dave Hughes and Huw Davis put Wetherby 17-15 up. But a last minute breakaway score stole the win for Old Mods.
