Spofforth Primary School is celebrating after its Year 4 swimming team proved they are the champions of the water.

First of all they won the school sports partnership swimming gala at Harrogate High School. After winning that they competed in the Harrogate Town Cluster Winners Final, which they also won. Then they competed against the winners from the Nidderdale, Knaresborough and Ripon clusters.

Spofforth emerged as champions and were presented with a shield and certificates.

A total of 64 schools took part in the competitions.

Headteacher Paul Griffiths described the final as a “thrilling race”.

He said: “For a small school to see off competition from so many other larger schools was a real achievement.

“I am incredibly proud of the children. They really enjoy their swimming sessions and have worked incredibly hard.

“It was a team effort over a number of weeks. As well as displaying tremendous ability and effort in the pool they represented their school superbly well showing excellent sportsmanship throughout all the competitions.”
