MEMBERS of Nidd Valley Runners club in Harrogate had a busy festive period, including the traditional Jolly Holly Jog in Ripon.

One member, Lee Dalton, came a superb second in the race on Tuesday, December 27 in a time of 36 minutes 21 seconds winning the Shaun Lee Johnstone Memorial Trophy as first local runner.

Dalton intends to raise money for the Shaun Lee Johnstone charity fund in this year’s London Marathon.

Other Nidd Valley results included Andy Todd 41.43, Lee Welsby 44.29, Maurice Kelly 45.05, Mike Deacon 45.26, Simon York 48.49, Fiona Deacon 48.54, Phil Robinson 49.56, Stuart Hatfield 57.14, Sarah Mattocks 57.59, Lizzie Medwell 1.00.05 and Judy Greenwood 1.01.43.

The Chevin Chase on Boxing Day, which allows club runners to compete alongside world champions and Olympic team members saw Nidd Valley members line up alongside Yorkshire’s triathlon heroes Jonathan and Alastair Brownlee.

As seems to be the trend in the last few years, this Boxing Day event was once again dominated by one of the Brownlees, this year Jonathan who took first place in 37:57 over the seven-mile course.

This year’s race was just as hilly but rather than the ice of last year there was a strong westerly to contend with. It was a well-supported race and the tough climb at five miles back up to the Royalty Pub saw a line of a couple hundred spectators providing encouragement vocally and with cow bells.

The five participants from Nidd Valley posted the following results: Andy Todd - 50:02. Mark David - 55:34. Nick Iles - 55:43. Emma David 1:00:23. Alison Iles 1:03:19.

Nidd Valley Road Runners were also in action at the Auld Lang Syne fell race over at Haworth on New Year’s Eve with Sarah Chalmers competing in the company of the Brownlee brothers, rugged conditions and a welter of incredible fancy dress outfits in a time of 84.44.
