Two Harrogate school friends have been selected to join the Yorkshire table tennis development squad.
Grove Road Primary School pupils Ben Bown, 10, and Jake Leonard, 11, were picked out by the English Table Tennis Association (ETTA) after intensive trials in Leeds last month.
Ben and Jake beat off competition from 40 other players to earn selection alongside two others in the development squad.
They will now train throughout the year with professionals as part of the ETTA’s specialist coaching programme.
Both players gained an enthusiasm for the sport at school after joining Mr Henderson’s table tennis club.
They then joined Harrogate Racquets Club under the stewardship of coaches George Chan and Dale Ward.
“We just enjoy playing as much table tennis as we can,” said Jake.
David Bown, Ben’s dad, said: “We are very proud of Ben and Jake, they have worked hard and have shown great progress.”
