Harrogate Grammar School student Ellie Rymer has claimed two podium places in national climbing competitions over the space of a fortnight.

She finished second in the Youth A section of the British Youth Climbing Series final at the EICA in Edinburgh, the world’s largest indoor climbing arena. Two weeks later, Ellie reached the final in the British Bouldering Championships, finishing second against Great Britain team members. It was the 16-year-old’s first podium in this competition. Ellie received a centenary grant from Harrogate Borough Council and trains at Harrogate Climbing Centre.

Going into the final route in Edinburgh, Ellie needed maximum points to win but just missed out, narrowly beaten into second place by the local favourite. “This was my last year in the junior section and I’m delighted to get another podium finish.” said Ellie

Added to her 3 podium finishes in successive years in the Youth Climbing Series, this clearly marks her out as one of the most consistent junior competition climbers in the country under coaches Ellie Howard and Dave Barrans.

At the same Bouldering championships, Dave succeeded in winning the senior section, becoming the reigning British champion at both bouldering and lead climbing - a particularly impressive feat given that most experts believe that you need to specialise in just one discipline to succeed. Dave is a member of Team GB and competes internationally on a regular basis.
