A Year 9 Ashville College pupil is representing North Yorkshire in the high jump at a national athletics competition being held in Gateshead.
Ben Bond, aged 14, who, this week, broke the Harrogate and Claro record by clearing 1m 73cm, is hoping to finish in the top five in Saturday’s English Championships.
The teenager, who lives on Harrogate’s Duchy estate, said: “Saturday’s competition will be a great experience for me.
“Obviously I’m looking to beat my own record at Gateshead, and I am hopeful of a top five finish.”
Ashville College athletics coach Duncan Archer said: “Ben is only 14 and has already smashed the school record.
“He is a gifted athlete and I’m confident that he will go on to beat his own record many more times and compete at the highest level.
“Even though the London Olympics have not begun yet, Ben should have his sights set on the Rio Olympics in 2016.”
The English Schools’ Athletic Association is dedicated to promoting the enjoyment of athletics in schools.
It aims to enhance the moral and physical welfare of children, by providing the right environment so that hidden talent can be discovered and visible talent can be encouraged at a variety of events throughout the year.
