Father and son pairing Brian and Stephen Walker celebrated a great Pairs Merit victory this week.
Brian has won this prestigious event on multiple occasions but this was the first title win with son Stephen which made it all the more special.
Qualifications got under way the previous week with over 50 pairs playing down to a final eight. In the opening game of the final, Bilton Dragons Ken and Rose Coker bowled an excellent game to beat the much fancied Swan pair Dave Rowson and Chaz Charleton 21-14. Brian and Stephen Walker from Wayside got their day off to a great start beating Knaresborough pair Stan Abbott and Rob Barker 21-3.
Black Swan’s Bobby Coker and Cory McLeod bowled well to hold off the challenge of Bilton Dragons Jane Blackburn and Janet Mudd to win 21-14. The last match saw some of the district’s brightest young stars on display as Pateley’s Tom Beecroft and Tony Derrick took on Josh Coker and Brad Walker from Bilton Dragon. Coker and Walker pushed on well to ensure a good 21-12 victory.
Walker and Walker in the first semi-final to held off another strong challenge from Rose and Ken Coker to win 21-15. In the second semi-final it was father versus son this time with Bobby Coker meeting Josh. Coker and McLeod produceds a very strong finish took them through to a 21-16 win.
And so it was to a final between Brian and Stephen Walker against Bobby and Cory McLeod. Coker and McLeod drew first blood with a great opening end to score three chalks. The Walkers secured the next three ends scoring seven before Coker and McLeod reclaimed the jack at 5-7.
The game saw only another six ends after this however as Brian put lead after lead with Stephen consistently beating all bowls in a terrific display that saw the Walkers dominate. The powerhouse performance took the Wayside pair on to a great 21-5 victory. HABA president Mr Derrick Fox congratulated all finalists on a fantastic day and thanked Bilton WMC for hosting the final.
Black Swan Bowling club celebrated a fine victory this week as they clinched the Challenge Cup after an exciting match against rivals Wayside.
Richard Hughes was at his usual high standards beating Mark Reynolds 21-14. Richard Hebblewhite bowled superbly to beat Alex Wolfenden 21-12 and Dave Smith was also on top of his game as he beat Gordon Flower 21-8 to give Black Swan the very best of starts.
Chris Rigby got Wayside off to their first win beating Chaz Charleton 21-17 with Brian Walker following up with a fantastic bowling display to beat Dave Hodgson 21-5. Wayside skipper Steve Cochrane battle through to eventually clinch a 21-20 win over Paul Birtwhistle.
At the half way point the teams shared three winners each, however Swan held the advantage with a 105-97 aggregate lead. In the second half John Gibbins put a stop to the Wayside revival with a good 21-16 win over Stuart Atkinson. Dave Rowson and John Henderson had a tight battle which the Swan skipper won 21-18 and the in-form Allan Whittaker enjoyed a 21-15 win over the every improving Martin Meecham.
Cory McLeod had his hands full against newcomer Lee Singleton with the Swan man just easing it 21-19.
Ian Kennedy secured Wayside’s only win in the second half beating Dave Lickley 21-17 before Martin Hemmingway brought proceedings to an end beating Paul Flower 21-10.
