Wetherby relishing test against Aston's Scarcroft

SCARCROFT and WETHERBY go head to head tomorrow, both sides looking to build on victories which returned them to winning ways.

Damian Aston’s Scarcroft secured a league and cup double over Walton, crushing them by 139 runs in the league on Saturday before knocking them out of the Fred Fleetwood Trophy with eight wickets to spare a day later.

The skipper himself enjoyed something of a purple weekend, making 73 not out and taking 5-43 on Saturday before hammering 75 not out against hapless Walton on Sunday.

Neil Thomas’ Wetherby meanwhile claimed local bragging rights over Spofforth, collecting a 62-run success which delighted their skipper.

“It’s always nice to beat Spofforth, particularly after they bowled us out for 100 in the cup,” said Thomas.

“They had us at 17-3 early on Saturday, and got both our Aussie and Ian Twitchen out but we dug in and a great knock by Majid meant we got to a decent total.

“We then kept in tight in the bowling and they never really challenged.”

Thomas is relishing another derby tomorrow against another set of old rivals.

“It’s always special to play Scarcroft as we used to play with a couple of their lads,” he said.

“They had a good result last week, Damian Aston looks like he’s back to his old ways and he and Carl Shaw are always tricky customers.

“Old Mods will probably win the league again this year but Scarcroft can beat anyone on their day so tomorrow will be tough.”

KIRK DEIGHTON meanwhile continue to march on, rising to third to put Old Mods and St Chad’s under pressure by virtue of Saturday’s nine-wicket demolition of East Keswick.

Skipper Richard Ward was a happy man after the match, which saw bowler Nick Ryder capture a stunning 7-19.

“It was a good result for us and we did it quite easily in the end,” said Ward.

“To win by nine wickets is always pleasing.

“Nick Ryder took 7-19, he bowled really well and it was certainly a good effort by him.

“We’re third in the table now, so we just need to keep winning and see where we are in five or six games.

“If we can keep going we should be in the mix come the end of the season.”

Kirk Deighton welcome Leeds Police to town tomorrow, who could be something of an unknown quanity for the skipper and his crew.

Police enter the game on the back of a 35-run defeat to Barwick.

“Leeds Police are a side I don’t know too much about as they came up from the second division last year,” said Ward.

“But looking at the results they’ve been doing alright so we’ve got to expect a tough afternoon.”

Kirk Deighton expect to be at full strength for tomorrow’s contest.

Elsewhere in the division, EAST KESWICK visit Great Preston, BARWICK travel to Old Mods, SHADWELL host SPOFFORTH, and WALTON journey to St Chad’s.

Division Two leaders CHURCH FENTON stay top of the pile and entertain Bramhope tomorrow.

SICKLINGHALL host Leeds Police A, THORNER are visitors at Garforth, SAXTON play at Old Leos, and WHIXLEY welcome Kippax.
