Wetherby Athletic boss Des English insists his side can halt their recent poor form at home to Kippax in the Barkston Ash Cup on Saturday (kick-off 1.30pm).

Wetherby are on a three-match losing run, despite scoring five goals in that time.

The run includes Saturday’s 2-1 League Cup exit at Ilkley Town.

Wetherby welcome Kippax looking for a morale-boosting cup result to spark a resurgence in form.

English said: “Saturday is a big test for us.

“We know how we want to play, if we keep it up and keep plugging away in time our luck will change.

“We are not far away from getting a positive result.

“We must improve and create a lot more chances.”

On Kippax, a side Wetherby beat 2-1 away from home in the league last month, the manager said: “We are up against a side who we played recently, so we know they are competitive and they will be aggressive with us.

“They always try very hard, but they are coming to our place, and I know it will be a good game.

“We need to move the ball around quickly and work to get through in the cup.”

On Saturday, Wetherby lost out to an extra-time Ilkley Town goal.

Looking back on the game, the manager said: “We lost in extra-time, but we played well and completely dominated the second half.

“They scored from their only chances, and it is frustrating but we asked the players to be competitive and they were.

“At the moment we are not getting the rub of the green.

“I was happy enough with the performance we made a couple of changes but the boys who came in did very well.”

The manager continued: “We tinkered with the formation at the weekend, and a lot of things worked very well.

“We will look again at changing things around.”

English revealed there are a number of players in the second team building their confidence and pushing for a first-team place.

He said: “The second team aren’t playing this weekend, there are one or two of them who are impressing me at the moment.

“I am looking at bringing them into the team, some of the players needed games and they are getting that now.

“These are players who just needed to play games and build confidence.”

Josh Buckley remains out for this weekend’s clash.

He is joined by Roman Neal and Navjot Sidhu.

Stuart Dove could return.
