Warmer days seem far away as Wetherby golf stays on ice

WITH Wetherby Golf Club's course completely snowbound, the outlook is not bright for the resumption of golf before the end of the month.

Even then the thaw, unless it is very gradual will bring the inevitable rising of the river and back to the resultant flooding that closed the course last November.

Hardly the best start for the club's centenary, though the plans for various celebrations are well advanced including the Centenary Dinner on July 3 to be held on the premises in a marquee and catered by the resident chef Richard and his team.

This will leave the clubhouse and terrace exclusively for the reception, entertainment and subsequent Ball.

The first event will be the Incorporation Day on Friday April 2. It will take the form of a Cocktail Reception with invited guests representing golf, local dignitaries and members of the press.

In August a Hickory Day has been arranged to enable members to play golf as it was a hundred years ago. The clubs will be supplied, but not the clothing.

Perhaps an opportunity to open up grandfather's locked trunk gathering dust in the attic!

This month the social highlight is the Annual Rabbits' Dinner on January 29. It has the reputation of being one of the best in Yorkshire Rabbit circles as guests from other clubs in the Harrogate area will testify.

Haydn Sissons has been booked to supervise the proceedings.
