Snow piling up fixtures as Wetherby sides face another blank weekend

WITH many West Yorkshire League pitches resembling a winter wonderland at the moment Wetherby Athletic boss Eugene Lacy knows yet another Division One fixture looks likely to bite the dust tomorrow.

The promotion chasers have been desperate to get their fixture schedule back on track after the festive break but with

Saturday's clash against Oxenhope Recreation called off and tomorrow's trip to Howden Clough in doubt it looks likely to be more time on the sidelines for Lacy's men.

Wetherby are already game chasing having played the joint fewest fixtures in the division alongwith Baildon.

"We really want to play on Saturday but that dosen't look likely now," said Lacy.

"We were due to play on Saturday but the referee said it was unplayable. We thought it was but the referee called it off from Wakefield. We've complained to the league about it but in hindsight it wasn't that bad.

"We had a training session instead and the lads were blowing like hell. Some of them had overindulged but we really wanted to play this weekend.

"It looks like now we'll have a backlog now at the end of the season. We're already behind in games."

BARDSEY are due to travel to Whitkirk in the County Cup tomorrow and return to Premier Division football next Saturday at home to Altofts.

Meanwhile Bardsey's Keswick Lane clubhouse has now closed. The existing building will be flattened and a brand new one erected in its place. The completion date is scheduled for April/May depending on the winter weather conditions.

The start date has been repeatedly postponed due to unforeseen building problems, the need to make two Planning Permission applications and finding the money to go through with the project.

After fulfilling all the necessary formal tendering procedures the building project has been awarded to Leodis of Leeds at a final cost of 286,000.

SHERBURN'S game away at Rothwell is also in danger. Nick Peacock's men are currently flying in the league and the Barkston Ash.

They'll be hoping to kick off the new year with a bang when they eventually return to action.

In Division Two BOSTON SPARTANS have also been thwarted in their attempts to get their new year schedule underway.

Chris Conway's men are due to welcome Great Preston tomorrow but that looks unlikely now after the recent cold snap hit the area.

They then have three away fixtures to get their teeth into in the remainder of January against Featherstone Colliery, Glasshoughton Welfare and Leeds Gryphons.
