Skipper backs Shaddy to continue sizzling form
By Andrew Groves
SHADWELL CC captain Joe Eddison has backed his in-form outfit to go to Great Preston and pick up yet another victory to prolong their superb run of results in Division One.
Shad’ have popped up from nowhere to sit joint third in the league just seven points behind leaders Scarcroft who slipped to defeat last weekend.
Eddison knows Preston will not lie down without a fight but with his men currently in a purple patch he believes they have what it takes to win the contest.
“We’re at full strength and I’m confident the way we’re playing that we can go there and get a win,” he said.
“I think they’re slightly better than their position in the table suggests. They were the first team to beat Scarcroft this season so they’ll be difficult.
“But we’re on a good run at the moment. We’ve won our last seven in league and cup and I’ve been really pleased with that.
“It’s just a bit annoying that we lost some silly games earlier on in the season. But it’s a tight league this year, everyone seems to be beating each other.
“We’ve just got to keep this run going and hope the other teams around us keep losing too.”
On Saturday Shaddy waltzed to a comfortable nine-wicket win over bottom side Church Fenton with Eddison’s men bowling out their opponents for just 53.
The star of the show was once again West Indian starlet Ryan Hercules who bagged five wickets including a hat-trick to set Shad’ on their way.
“He got the first three wickets of their innings,” continued Eddison.
“The first one was caught at slip and the other two were both bowled. He was quite quiet when he got the last one but he asked if he could have the match ball as a memento.
“He’s been doing well but the whole team have this year. We shared the wickets around a bit at the weekend with Ryan getting a few then Joe Burke getting a few at the end.
“It was a good win but we’ve just got to keep it going and see what happens.”
CHURCH FENTON will be hoping for some respite in the league tomorrow when they travel to SCARCROFT. Damian Aston’s men are still licking their wounds after their defeat to Old Mods last weekend.
KIRK DEIGHTON captain Richard Ward doesn’t see any reason why his side can’t go out and beat defending champions SPOFFORTH tomorrow when the two cross swords at School Lane.
Simon Taylor’s men returned to winning ways on Saturday but only just, beating Barwick by two wickets in an exciting end to their clash.
Ward feels there are chinks in Spofforth’s armour this season and he’s looking to attack them early.
“They’ve lost a couple this season and we’re going into it on a high after the victory last week,” said Ward.
“We’re at full strength too which is really pleasing. There’s no reason why we can’t go there and get a win. Spofforth are obviously a good side and they’ve got off to a good start.
“But we’ll be going there looking to win.”
On Saturday Deighton (210-6) managed to defend their total at the death against Sicklinghall who were all out for 209 on the penultimate ball of the game.
“Things went right for a change,” added Ward.
“The luck went our way and hopefully it’s starting to change a bit now. We’ve not had that so far this season but hopefully that’s it and we can go on a bit of a run.
“But we’ve got some tough games coming up. We’re full of confidence after last week and hopefully we can get another win.”
SICKLINGHALL captain Steve Fisher knows his side will be in for a tough contest tomorrow when they welcome title challengers Old Modernians.
‘Hall will come into the contest on the back of Saturday’s agonising one-run defeat against rivals Kirk Deighton with their skipper eyeing an improvement.
However Mods are a team in form and high on confidence after their victory over Scarcroft on Saturday and Fisher is aware of their threat.
“They’re a really good team, we know it will be a difficult game,” he said.
“We’re missing a few lads from the first team but that will give us a chance to bring a few up from the second team. they’ve been doing well this season and they’ll be up for it.”
WETHERBY captain Andy Twitchen will be eager for an immediate fightback from his side after their narrow 13-run loss away at Great Preston last weekend.
Tomorrow his side are at home to WALTON who slipped up against St Chad’s last weekend.
