Shaddy eye league and cup success

SHADWELL captain Gavin Fletcher says his side are primed for a busy week after a morale-boosting victory against Spofforth.

They host East Keswick tomorrow, welcome Kirk Deighton in the Fred Fleetwood Cup quarter-finals on Sunday, then receive a visit from Old Mods in the last eight of the Senior Cup on Tuesday night.

Shaddy prepared for the fixture glut by securing an impressive win over Spofforth, as Alex Blakeborough (60) and Ryan Hercules (40) helped them to 187-9, before they dismissed the visitors for 152, Hercules nabbing 4-28.

“It was important for us to get back to winning ways after being comprehensively thumped the week before, and we did that,” Fletcher said.

“We gave a better all-round performance and we probably deserved the victory.

“It looks closer on paper that it actually was and it’s given us a much-needed boost.

“With Chad’s and Deighton both losing, it was a good weekend - we’re right back in it.”

Shaddy’s recent form has been erratic.

They gave Walton “a bit of a tubbing” on June 12, but contrived to lose to St Chad’s Broomfield last week after bowling them out for 140.

“That would have cemented our place and at halfway it was the ideal scenario - we couldn’t have wished for anything better.

“But we just collapsed really, giving a really poor batting performance.

“I asked for a little more from the boys at the weekend and they delivered.”

Fletcher is hopeful his players can notch up another win against East Keswick tomorrow, saying: “No disrespect to them, but we should be winning that game.

“It’s quite a hectic week, but we are glad to have the games coming thick and fast, because it means we are still in competition,” he said.

Shad’ have permanently lost one senior player, Lee Carass, due to work commitments, but new recruit Harpal Singh should help shore up the batting order - having been unable to commit to Farsley.

“Funnily enough, with all our up-and-down results, where we’ve struggled and not achieved what we expected to achieve, has been with the bat,” Fletcher said.

“Shadwell have had problems down the years chasing small scores.

“We hope to put that right - or to not have to really chase them at all.”

WETHERBY will look to bounce back from the “bitter disappointment” of Saturday’s defeat to local rivals Scarcroft as they take on league leaders Old Mods tomorrow.

Neil Thomas’ men restricted Scarcroft to 174-7 but were then dismissed for 131, leaving them ninth in the Wetherby League.

The captain said: “We bowled and fielded very well as a team, fighting really hard on a small ground, but unfortunately we contrived to bat poorly.

“We didn’t create partnerships and we lost early wickets through poor shots.

“I was bitterly disappointed.

“Hopefully now we can make up for it against the champions.”

Naz Aslam, who thumped an unbeaten 75 against Old Mods in the opening game of the season, should be back in the squad, with only Andy Twitchen set to miss the fixture.

“We started off reasonably well against Old Mods last time, but fell a bit short,” Thomas said.

“We have the batsmen to create problems for any team in the league, but we are not putting partnerships together and we have got to put that right.”

SCARCROFT play host to Barwick in Elmet tomorrow, while Great Preston are the visitors to SPOFFORTH. KIRK DEIGHTON travel to St Chads, and WALTON welcome Leeds Police.

WHIXLEY are away at Leeds Police A, as SAXTON receive a visit from Church Fenton. SICKLINGHALL host Kippax Welfare, with THORNER at home to Crossgates.
