Podium finish for Phillips in Midlands

WETHERBY Runner Jamie Phillips made the final of the English Schools Athletics Championships at Alexandra Stadium in Birmingham last weekend.

He finished eighth in the Senior Boys 200m final in a time of 22.08 seconds.

The day ended with silverware for Jamie, as North Yorkshire claimed third in the Senior Boys 4 x 100m relay final, with Jamie leading off the team on the first leg.

This was the third year Jamie has qualified to represent North Yorkshire schools.

Head coach of Wetherby Runners Ian Legg said: "This was a tremendous performance by Jamie and credit to all his hard work and commitment to training.

“He is starting to attract interest from the wider athletics community as he climbs up the UK rankings. It is a real boost to the younger athletes in our developing club to have Jamie in the squad. We are all very proud of his achievements"

Meantime, there was more success for Wetherby Runners at the sixth race of the Black Sheep Race Series last week when Carol Pettifar won the second O-60 prize at the arduous Burn Valley Half Marathon at Masham.

With only two races remaining in the series, the final positions are shaping up for team and individual prize rankings.

Last week’s results were Paul Windle 25th in 1 hour 32 mins and 9 secs, Ian Smith 117th in 1.49.29, Sue Sharples 118th in 1.49.33, Jacky Darley 212nd in 2.07.35, Moira Kremer 267th in 2.22.59 and Carol Pettifar 285th in 2.41.26.
