Tadcaster Albion’s young team needs to learn to keep the pressure on opponents when they are leading, according to boss Paul Marshall.
The manager is concerned Tad have a habit of taking their foot off the gas when they take the lead, only for the opposition to find a way back into the game.
Sixth-placed Tad took the lead in eight minutes at home to Liversedge on Saturday through Chris Kamara, but found themselves 2-1 down seven minutes after the break.
A late Danny Gray equaliser spared Tad’s blushes, and the side improved in Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw at Thackley, with Kamara scoring again.
Ahead of this weekend’s home clash with second-placed Worksop Parramore and Tuesday’s trip to Brighouse Town, Marshall is urging his side to maintain the tempo for 90 minutes.
He said: “Our players work hard, but when we take the lead we are taking our foot off the gas, which is a problem.
“It gives teams a chance to get back into the game, so when we get the lead we need to learn to keep the momentum going.”
On Worksop Parramore, the boss said: “We have a very big game this weekend, they are one of the most attacking sides I have seen this season.
“But they do give you a chance at the back.
“Their leading goalscorer Lee Whittington picked up an injury, but if he is fit, he and Lee Holmes are very dangerous.”
Tad beat Worksop 2-1 away from home in October, scoring twice in the final three minutes.
Marshall reckons both sides played good football, and is eyeing a repeat this weekend.
He said: “It was a brilliant game of football, both teams passed the ball very quickly and I hope we see the same again.”
The manager is hoping his young players can learn from experienced stars such as ‘keeper Adam Mitchell.
He said: “Adam brings a wealth of experience to the team.
“We have probably got eight boys under the age 21, and they are good players, but we try to use the experienced players to help them along the way.
“I am delighted these boys want to come and play for us, it shows where the club is and where we could be in five years.”
Reflecting on Saturday’s draw, Marshall said: “I was disappointed with the result.
“We started very brightly, then tailed off and let them back in. We took them a little lightly when we went 1-0 up, and they made it very difficult for us.
“Credit to the lads, they stuck it out. I thought Matthew Sparkes and Ryan Qualter did very well at the back.”
Tad have no fresh injury concerns for Saturday.
