Football: Don't get carried away says Athletic boss
THEY'VE slain a Premier League giant but Wetherby Athletic boss Eugene Lacy isn't getting carried away despite their League Cup victory at Whitkirk Wanderers on Saturday.
Lacy's side are on the road again tomorrow in the County Cup Third Round at Ovenden West Riding (1pm ko).
The tie was due to be played at The Ings but got switched to Tadcaster Magnet after Wetherby's home ground flooded when the River Wharfe burst its banks.
"It's an unwelcome distraction," said Lacy.
"But a good performance could fill the team with more confidence like it did on Saturday. We just want the game to be played, we don't want it to carry over.
"We could do with playing it and then get back to the league games which are the most important thing for us."
On Saturday a much changed Wetherby outfit made the trip to their West Yorkshire rivals and started brightly carving out the first opportunities of the game.
They took the lead through a Mark Brady strike and held their own until the break.
In the second half however it was all Whitkirk who missed a host of chances to get back into the match. However Wetherby's defence stood tall to hang on for a famous win.
"They were very, very relaxed and thought it was going to be a walkover," said Lacy.
"But we dominated the first 20 minutes and took the lead. But then after that they battered us. They were all over us in the second half and they should have scored.
"They hit the post about four times. I'm not going to get carried away with it, it reads well but could have been a different result.
"The defence deserves a lot of credit. All four of them played really well, they were absolutely outstanding."
BARDSEY are also in County Cup action tomorrow away at Heckmondwike Town with Martin Bradley's men looking to build on their excellent 6-0 triumph at Aberford Albion. The league win has kept Bardsey firmly in the hunt for the title one place below Beeston who are currently four points above them but the Keswick Lane outfit have two in hand over their rivals.
BOSTON SPARTANS assistant Ted O'Donoghue is looking forward to tomorrow's trip to unknown quantity Honley in the County Challenge Cup Fourth Round tomorrow.
Boston have had a decent run in the competition so far this season beating Ossett Common Rovers and Pool in their previous rounds.
They'll be in for a tricky ride tomorrow against a strong opposition but O'Donoghue is hopeful they can pick up a result.
"I don't know a lot about them to be honest," said O'Donoghue.
"It's a 1pm start. By ten past one we'll know a bit more about them.
"We're looking a little bit stronger this week so we'll have to see."
On Saturday Boston were beaten 8-2 by Premier League outfit Altofts in the League Cup with Brian Parker (pen) and Adam Tasker grabbing the Spartans goals.
"They were a good side but we missed two or three good chances in the first half and then two or three in the second half, it could have been a different score," added O'Donoghue.
"We had a lot of players out and had just five regular first teamers. We had to draft a load in for the reserves and they did well.
"Jonny Hicks was probably our best player. Everything that was good by us came through him, he got stuck in and wasn't scared to put a foot in."
