Diving: Oliver strikes gold in Plymouth

Harrogate diver Oliver Dingley won the 1m springboard in Plymouth.

Harrogate diver Oliver Dingley was back to his brilliant best on Friday, winning gold at the British Gas Diving Championships in Plymouth.

A former champion in 2011, Dingley stormed the 1m springboard competition to retain the title he won in 2011.

He then picked up silver in the 3m competition, behind Ripon’s Jack Laugher.

The 1m event wasn’t contested at last year’s British Gas Diving Championships which doubled up as Olympic trials but 20-year-old Dingley proved he’s still the one to beat on the lowest board as he notched 385.30 to win gold.

“It was about keeping my cool and thankfully it paid off,” he told the British Swimming official website.

And having beaten World Championships 3m finalist Jack Laugher (374.75) and Olympic 3m finalist Chris Mears (362.90) into second and third, Dingley admitted he was pleased.

The Harrogate medallist missed out on Olympic selection last year after an abdominal injury and has been determined to prove himself to national performance director Alexei Evangulov.

Dingley was the youngest ever men’s springboard champion at the age of just 15.

“I’m relieved,” said Dingley, who has now won the senior British 1m Springboard title four times.

“It was about keeping my cool and thankfully that paid off for me today so I’m really happy with that performance.

“I had Jack one side of me and Chris the other side of me – they’re both very good divers and I managed to keep my cool in that little group.

“I have a routine when I dive and that’s to stay away from looking at the leaderboard – it’s one dive at a time for me.”
