Collingham ready to put Burley plan of attack into action
SATURDAY's torrential downpour ripped apart the Aire Wharfe fixture programme, and COLLINGHAM'S visit to champions Beckwithshaw was no exception.
Skipper Toby Jacklin was disappointed but philosophical, and instead used the hours indoors to draft a plan of attack against tomorrow’s visitors, current leaders Burley (1pm).
“It was a shame as we could have done with beating Beckwithshaw,” he said.
“We’ve had a bit of a disappointing start to the season so it would have been nice to give them a beating
“But you can’t control the weather.
“Burley is another tough test but I think we’re confident we can put on a good show and stand a good chance of winning.”
As Burley continue to lead the chasing pack after a string of impressive results, Jacklin is targeting all-rounder Nick Brook as the main danger.
“He’s probably the biggest danger and he’s always done quite well against us,” said Jacklin.
“When it was raining on Saturday we were talking about the Burley game, and how to beat them.
“I think we’ll approach it slightly differently than normal, although we did beat them twice last year.
“I don’t think their team’s changed that much this year and ours hasn’t either so we do stand a decent chance.
“We should have a full strength side out.
“That’s definitely been an advantage for us this year, being able to field a strong side most weeks.
“We’ve also got a few second-teamers pushing for selection.
“That’s now definitely creating competition for places which is always good.”
The non-stop rain also ensured BARDSEY stood no chance of completing Saturday’s encounter at Alwoodley.
This meant a frustrating afternoon for skipper Gary Hopton, as he looks to lead his troops away from the foot of the Division Three table.
The Keswick Lane club now face a busy weekend of league and cup cricket, entertaining Horsforth in the Aire Wharfe tomorrow before Sunday’s National Village Cup hosting of Pontefract outfit Ackworth.
“Saturday was pretty annoying, especially given that we’re down at the bottom of the league at the moment and we were hoping for a six-pointer, but there was nothing we could do,” said Hopton.
“It didn’t stop all afternoon, and never gave us half an hour for the Alwoodley guys to get out there and get the ground ready, so all in all, a very frustrating afternoon.
“It’s a full weekend for us now, but we get the keys to the new clubhouse this weekend which will be good.
“The bar won’t be ready for another week but the changing rooms will be.”
First up for Bardsey are fellow Division Three strugglers Horsforth, who currently reside a point above their hosts afer a mixed start to the campaign.
“They’ve started pretty averagely, and from what I’ve read they’re a bunch of young lads who can be a bit hit-and-miss,” said Hopton.
“ We’ve obviously not played them for a few years so they’re a bit of an unknown quantity and we can only really go on their league form.
“We’ve got one player missing this weekend, Peter Pratt’s away, and we’re also awaiting the Yorkshire Academy selection to see if James Wainman makes the side.
“That’s obviously out of our hands.
It’s great for the club to have someone in the Academy, but we could do with him playing for us this weekend.”
Pontefract visitors Ackworth are also another unknown quantity, but Hopton is hoping to field a strong side for the National Village Cup contest.
“I haven’t checked Ackworth’s results yet so I’m not too sure what they’ll bring,” he added.
“We often struggle for people on a Sunday but a few of the guys have expressed an interest in playing so we should be okay.”
