Basement Bardsey eye upset in bid to move off bottom spot

BARDSEY captain Gary Hopton is hoping his side pull off a major upset tomorrow away at title chasing Illingworth in their last fixture before the mid-season turnaround.

Hopton’s side make the long trek to Halifax (1.30pm start) without a string of first team regulars. They’re also desperately chasing some points after their defeat to Pool at the weekend.

Their opponents meanwhile are currently riding the crest of a wave near the top of the Division Two table after promotion from Division Three.

However they enter the game on a slight downward tilt after slipping to defeat away at Upper Wharfedale on Saturday.

“Illingworth came up last season and they’ve been having a really good season,” said Hopton.

“But we’ll just have to see how it goes. We’re missing a few players unfortunately, some of the younger element of the team are going on holiday so we’re four or five short.

“But we’ve just got to give it a go.”

On Saturday Bardsey welcomed Pool to Keswick Lane and immediately attacked them with the ball restricting them to 70-5.

However Pool’s lower order dug in to pull them up to 227, setting a competitive total for Bardsey to chase. Jonty Smith (4-40) and Jonny Davis (4-53) bowling well for the Keswick Lane outfit.

Hopton’s side gave it their best shot in response with Eddie Clayton making a fine 69 but it proved in vain as they slipped to 134 all out.

“We did well to start off with, they were 70-5 at one point but they’ve got a lot of strength in depth with their batting,” added Hopton.

“Eddie batted really well for us but no-one else supported him.”

In Division One COLLINGHAM continued their quest to pull up the table with a victory over title-chasing North Leeds at the weekend.

Tomorrow Toby Jacklin’s men welcome in-form Guiseley.

On Saturday North Leeds managed to post 182 with Jacklin taking 6-45 to restrict them. Eugene Burzler (75), Tim Hollis (42no) and Sam Anderson (40no) then pulled them home in response on 185-3.
