Bardsey hoping youngsters can show their class

BARDSEY are looking to get their season back on track at Colton tomorrow, after a heavy defeat to visitors Horsforth last time around.

Captain Gary Hopton watched his side concede 345 runs off 50 overs on Saturday and is calling for a reaction from his side - who go into this weekend’s game five players down.

“I want an all-round better performance from start to finish, to show we aren’t as bad as recent results and performances might suggest,” he said.

Horsforth were 95-2 off the first 25 overs, but powered on to amass 345-7, with Andrew Robinson hitting an unbeaten century off 51 balls.

“I was pretty disappointed,” Hopton said.

“We didn’t bowl or field particularly well in the first half and they dominated us on what was a good track.

“They batted well, but we didn’t apply pressure for any sustained period of time and we were supplying bad bowling at too regular an interval.”

In response, Bardsey were bowled out for 194, with Tom Clayton (63) and Eddie Clayton (34) having the best of it.

“Our mentality was just to bat the full 50 overs, seeing where we were with 10 to go,” Hopton said.

“We started off quite well and you almost start to believe you can do something, but we lost three wickets and then one of their bowlers (Kristopher Lewis) got a hat-trick, so really any chance we had was cut to shreds with the best part of 30 overs left.”

Bardsey are without five first-teamers for the trip to Colton, with Hopton saying it is time for his youngsters to make their mark.

“We have quite a young squad,” he said.

“There is a great junior set-up down here and in a way we are reaping the rewards, with players stepping up to senior level.

“But though it bodes well for the future, you can’t just think about potential - they have got to start showing what they can do now.”

COLLINGHAM lie seventh in Division One after taking two points from their match against leaders Burley on Saturday, and visit Adel tomorrow.

Toby Jacklin’s men struggled to deal with Burley’s batting strength, as the table-toppers amassed 200-7.

Collingham hit back through Dalton Polius (37no), but could only reach 156-7.

Bowler Steve Booth said he was hopeful of a positive result against Adel.

“We beat them in the first round of the cup about five weeks ago,” he said.

“They are a good side, but they have been struggling a little bit this year.”

Collingham then host Kirstall Educational in the Waddilove Cup second round on Sunday.
