Bardsey boss: Let's finish year on a high!

BARDSEY joint boss Martin Bradley is looking to finish 2009 with a bang tomorrow when they welcome Rothwell Athletic to Keswick Lane (2pm ko).

Bardsey were dealt a favour by Sherburn White Rose on Saturday when they beat current leaders Beeston 2-1 to blow the Premier League title race wide open.

Bradley's men are now just four points behind Beeston but have three crucial games in hand. Win those and they'll be on top of the mountain so the manager is looking to end on a high tomorrow.

"We need to look at finishing this year off well," he said.

"Especially after last season which was a difficult season I'd like to get a win and then it's something to build on going into 2010.

"We've got Rothwell at home which won't be easy. They beat Whitkirk in their last fixture and their results have improved since we last played them.

"But we're in a good position now in the league. We don't need to rely on anyone."

Bardsey will enter 2010 in the hunt for the league and the County Cup after they beat Heckmondwicke Town 3-1 on Saturday, thanks to second-half goals from Daniel Stimpson, Jamie Thompson and Calem Connolly.

Their reward is a trip to rivals Whitkirk early in the New Year.

"The lads are looking forward to that one but I'm not looking that far forward yet, we've got one or two big games before then," added Bradley.

"There's no love lost between the two clubs after what's happened over the last few seasons. I am sure it's going to be a tasty one and it's going to be a difficult game at their place.

"I've told the lads now to go out and win the County Cup. The talent is there in our side, we've just got to perform."

SHERBURN meanwhile will seek to build on Saturday's Beeston triumph when they travel to Boroughbridge in the league.

In Division One Eugene Lacy's WETHERBY ATHLETIC bounced back from their County Cup defeat with a fine 5-0 thrashing of Hartshead on Saturday.

Tomorrow they're aiming to continue their push for the title and promotion to the top flight with a clash away at Wyke Wanderers.

"We need to keep putting points on the board," said Lacy.

"It's a similar situation this week from last. I know if we play well we'll win but if we treat it just like any other game we could struggle.

"It depends what side of the bed the players get out of. We know the area, Wyke is near Liversedge where I used to manage"

On Saturday Wetherby entered the half-time break at 0-0. However in the second half they came out all guns blazing with sub' Denis Metcalf scoring a hat-trick and Adam Jesusko and Damien Mitchell grabbing the rest.

"It was as easy as it sounds," added Lacy.

"We were 0-0 at half-time but I knew we were going to win. We played some good stuff and once the first one went in it was just a case of how many we'd score."

BOSTON SPARTANS' run in the County Challenge Trophy is over after a 4-2 defeat away at Honley last weekend. They host South Milford tomorrow.
