Bardsey boss aims to cut out defensive mistakes

By Andrew Groves

BARDSEY’S double dream is still very much on the cards but joint-boss Martin Bradley knows they have to cut out defensive errors if their season is to stay on track for success.

After a long, weather-enforced lay-off the Keswick Lane outfit returned to competitive action on Saturday, beating rivals Whitkirk 4-3 in the County Cup.

The victory has now set-up a mouth-watering quarter-final clash against Carlton Athletic in two weeks after they thrashed Halifax Irish Club 8-3.

Tomorrow Bardsey are back in league action with a Premier Division home game against Field (2pm).

“It won’t be easy against Field; they’re a good side,” said Bradley.

“But we’re in a good position in the league. We’ve got three games in hand and it’s important we use them.

“It was a good result last week. I was a bit disappointed with the way we defended – we let in three sloppy goals – but, to say we haven’t played for a while, I thought we did well.”

After a few attempts to get the game played in previous weeks Saturday’s much-anticipated cup tie got the go-ahead after the recent snow melted.

Bardsey hit the traps running and opened the scoring through Lee Womersley. The home side equalised before Robert Dickinson made it 2-1 against his old club.

Whitkirk levelled before the break and then made it 3-2 in the second half. But Bardsey dug deep and equalised through Wes Freeman and then Dickinson scored his second of the afternoon to book their passage in the next round of the competition.

“We’ve got Carlton in the next round and that’s going to be a good game,” added Bradley.

“They had a very good win against Halifax Irish. I’m sure they’ll put out every Tom, Dick and Harry for that one; there’s not a lot of love lost between us and them.”

Apart from Mick Longfellow, Bardsey should be at full strength for tomorrow’s league contest.

SHERBURN WHITE ROSE will be looking for a winning return to league action tomorrow when they travel to Carlton Athletic.

On Saturday they easily moved through to the next round of the League Cup with a 6-2 win over Ilkley Town.

After their 3-3 draw against former leaders Kellingley Welfare last Saturday WETHERBY ATHLETIC will be eyeing three points in their home clash against Hartshead tomorrow.

Eugene Lacy’s side still have some crucial games in hand over their nearest rivals as they look to end their January fixture list with a bang.

In Division Two BOSTON SPARTANS boss Chris Conway is looking forward to crossing swords with Leeds Gryphons away tomorrow as they look to bounce back with a victory.

Spartans were beaten 4-0 at Glasshoughton Welfare on Saturday but Conway was pleased with their performance and hopes they can replicate it again against one of the league’s in-form sides.

The Boston boss is hopeful he can pick from last week’s set of players.

“It seems strange to say it but I wasn’t too upset with our performance last week,” he said.

“Yeah, we were beaten 4-0 and 4-0 looks bad but we played some good football at times. If we keep that up this week then we’ll be in with a chance.

“Leeds Gryphons are new to this league and they’re doing well so far.

“But you never know; we’ve just got to put in the same level of performance as we did last week.

“We started the game with ten men and we were 2-0 down within ten minutes or so. But for the first goal there was a foul in the build-up to it and the second was a penalty so we were a bit unlucky.

“But it was just nice to be back out there playing.”
