Athletic handed mouthwatering tie

THEY'RE lagging behind in the league but storming away in the cup that's the story so far for Eugene Lacy and his Wetherby Athletic troops as they look for a double cause for celebration at the end of the season.

The Ings based side are through to the quarter-final of the League Cup after Saturday's hard fought 3-1 victory away at Oxenhope Recreation.

The victory has set-up a mouth-watering clash at home to current Premier League leaders Beeston who only just squeezed past Division Two outfit Leeds Gryphons on penalties.

The fixture has been pencilled in for two weeks time but for Lacy and his troops tomorrow it's a return to the league as they look to fire themselves back into the promotion race.

Despite the season entering March Wetherby have still only played 16 games due to a host of clashes called off over Christmas due to adverse weather conditions.

It means Lacy's troops will be playing well into May something the gaffer is preparing for.

"We're playing catch-up at the moment," he said.

"We've only played 16 games. We're still not half-way through the season it's mad, there's so many games to come and we know there's going to be a backlog.

"I just hope it dosen't effect us at the end of the season. We're still in a good position but there's still a long way to go.

"We've got so many games in hand."

Tomorrow Wetherby are on the road to Horbury Town who currently sit fourth in the division. Athletic picked up a 2-0 victory over Town earlier in the season and Lacy's looking for a league double.

"I can't really remember much of that game to be honest," added Lacy.

"We'll be looking for another win but we'll just have to see. It's a league game so it's an important game for us, every game for us in the league at the moment is important."

On Saturday Wetherby put in an assured team performance to beat Oxenhope 3-1 on their home patch and move through to the next round of the competition.

Rob Cromack opened the scoring for the away side but Recreation levelled proceedings soon after. But Wetherby continued to fight away at scored next through Denis Metcalf and then sealed the win through a John Doherty strike.

"It was a really good victory and performance against a big, strong side," added Lacy.

"We've got Beeston in the next round which should be a good game. At the start of the season we said we wanted to go straight back up and do well in the League Cup.

"Everyone's in the League Cup so it's a good measure of how far we've come."

In the Premier League tomorrow BARDSEY will be looking for a positive performance at home to Leeds City tomorrow.

It's been a busy week for the Keswick Lane outfit. On Saturday they travelled to rivals Boroughbridge and finished on the wrong end of a 2-1 defeat.

Then on Wednesday night they travelled to Field in the league and won 4-1 to move top of the table.

It promises to be a busy time for Bardsey over the next few weeks with games against Otley Rovers, Rothwell and Ossett Common Rovers to come.

SHERBURN have a tasty treat to get their teeth into tomorrow when they gear up for a trip to leaders Beeston. On Saturday their proposed League Cup clash against Woodhouse Hill WMC was postponed due to weather.

In Division Two BOSTON SPARTANS travel to Mount St. Mary's tomorrow.

On Saturday they were beaten again this time 4-2 at home to Great Preston.
