Draw specialists Boroughbridge kept alive their hopes of retaining the Whitworth Cup after battling past Beckwithshaw Saints on Wednesday.

Daz Ekin’s men beat the Harrogate & District League reigning champions 2-1 at Station View, with goals from Andy Layton and Mark Burniston.

Saints took an early lead from a second minute corner and could have made the lead two before Andy Layton restored parity on 10 minutes, heading home Mark Burniston’s corner.

After an open first half in which both sides had chances to add to their tallies, ‘Bridge came out firing in the second half.

And, having been denied from long range shortly after the re-start by the Saints ‘keeper, Burniston fired ‘Bridge into the lead for the first time on 66 minutes with an excellent strike from outside the area.

‘Bridge had several clear cut chances to add to their tally, but faded as the half progressed and were left to defend out the six added minutes against a resolute Saints side.

Ekin’s men’s opponents in the Final will be either Ripon City or Knaresborough Town, who will contest the second semi-final at a date to be decided.

Meanwhile in the West Yorkshire League, Bridge extended their remarkable haul of draws this season, as they held title hopefuls Field 2-2 away on Saturday.

Field are the only team that can stop Bardsey claiming the league championship, should they win their eight remaining matches.

But Boroughbridge were more than a match for the Bradford outfit and goals from Baz O’Neill and Jake Fletcher earned them a 13th draw of the term.

Meanwhile, Bridge reserves as good as secured promotion into Alliance Division One after beating Garforth Rangers Reserves 2-0.

Paul Scaife opened the scoring before Steve Warburton sealed the celebrations for Elliott Sheeran’s side.

Only a 22-goal defeat in their final match of the season at fourth bottom Baildon Trinity Athletic Reserves will see them fail to earn the rise up.

Bridge A also gave their promotion chances a boost in Harrogate & District Division Two as Alex Coombes’ goal beat Addingham 1-0.

Bridge are one point off pole-sitters Bramham with a game in hand.
