Wetherby Athletic went two goals up inside three minutes, but still ended up falling to an eighth loss in nine league games when they were beaten by 5-2 by Hunslet Club.

Debutant Daniel Crooks netted a quick-fire brace to get the Tangerines off to the perfect start at The Ings, but their visitors hit back with five unanswered goals to leave Athletic boss Mark Forster frustrated.

“To get in that position and then witness what has happened, I’m so disappointed. Words fail me about certain things,”he said.

“To be honest, I don’t think I’ve been more disappointed after a game.

“We are 2-0 up after two or three minutes and the game should be over, it really should be over but once again we have managed to lose a match that we shouldn’t have.

“We need to learn to put our foot through the ball and clear it, we need to learn when to pass and we need to learn to look where we are going.”

Saturday’s West Yorkshire Football League Premier Division game was barely a minute old when Jon Maloney flicked the ball to Crooks, who marked his first appearance for Athletic by shooting past former Harrogate Town custodian Jordan Myers for 1-0.

Wetherby’s delight was doubled two minutes later when a carbon copy of the move which led to their first goal allowed Crooks to finish past a shell-shocked Myers for a second time.

Hunslet managed to pull a goal back shortly afterwards and then levelled the scores with 14 minutes on the clock.

There were no more goals before the interval, but the visitors took the lead in the 51st minute and then secured the points with two strikes in the final five minutes.

Pacy substitute Teydiairine Machami was named Wetherby’s man of the match after causing the Hunslet defence plenty of problems following his arrival from the bench.
