KIRK Deighton boss Dan Marshall will stay on as manager next season and fight for that elusive trophy after a campaign of nearlys at Barr Field this year.
Deighton finished runner-up in the Harrogate Premier League and were beaten by Spa Athletic in the Senior Cup final on Monday night after a nailbiting penalty shootout.

It followed Saturday’s 2-1 defeat away at Sherwood, a game Marshall believed t
hey really should have won, Rich Metcalf grabbing their only goal.

However now the boss is planning for next season and is hopeful with a bit more luck a trophy could come their way.

“I can’t praise the boys enough for the effort they’ve put in this season,” said Marshall.

“We’ve pushed Thirsk in the league and we got to a cup final but I suppose it just wasn’t meant to be.

“The boys have been fantastic and hopefully if they all stay together again next season you never know.”

Monday’s cup heartache was hard to take according to the Deighton boss especially after Colin MacDonald rattled the post in the first half of extra time.

But Marshall wasn’t bitter with the defeat and praised his side for their performance in the cups this season.

“We’ve had a very good run in both the Senior Cup and the West Riding Cup this year and that’s all credit to the players for sticking with it,” added Marshall.

“Now it’s all down to next season. I’ll be staying as manager and hopefully next season we’ll be able to go one better.”
