Wetherby-based Yorkshire Lass Cycling Club (YLCC), one of the region’s only all-female cycling clubs, is going from strength to strength with its members cycling more than 5,500m all over Yorkshire and beyond since the club was launched three months ago.

Kate Horsfall of Wetherby and Judith Worrall of Thirsk formed the club last March, with the support of Wetherby-based All Terrain Cycles, in response to the growing popularity of women’s cycling.

“It’s been full steam ahead for Yorkshire Lass and the club is making quite a name for itself,” said Kate.

“We now have 76 members who come from all over the region, they’re all mixes of ability and a great bunch of ladies.

“Jude and I are thrilled that all the ladies are so pleased to have a network of friends who they can ride with and we are really proud of how well received the club has been.

“We are getting out and about a lot in our posh new club kit and people are starting to take notice, it’s a real head turner!”

As well as meeting at 10am most Sunday’s at All Terrain Cycles’ Wetherby store for a ride, members of the club have also taken part in numerous cycling events.

“Ten of us completed the 100k Women V Cancer Ride the Night in London in May, the last 30 miles were in the rain so we were all pleased to finish.

“Some of our ladies also took part in the gruelling Wetherby to Filey ride in June and we were also represented in the Tour de Yorkshire women’s Cycletta.

“We had a fab day and for two of our ladies it was their first sportive, so they were really proud.”

Tony Booth, managing director of All Terrain Cycles, said: “It’s great to see Yorkshire Lass CC take off in such a big way.

“This summer we’ve noticed a huge increase in the number of women visiting our stores, and clubs like this are ideal for anyone wanting to give cycling a go – it’s all about meeting people, having fun and getting some fresh air and exercise along the way.”

Judith added: “All in all, things are looking fabulous for the future of the club. Our new winter kit will soon be available and All Terrain is planning to organise some maintenance courses for us at the shop soon to give the ladies some confidence in their ability to service and repair their bikes.

“We also now have a social secretary and recently enjoyed our first social evening with more planned later in the year.”
