PUPILS at Lady Hastings Primary School in Collingham are taking part in a sponsored read this summer in a bid to raise money for a refurbishment of classrooms and toilets at the school.

The school is hoping to raise £16,000 as part of a refurbishment project of Key stage two classrooms and toilets.

The toilets, which are the original ones from when the building was built are, in the word of the pupils, ‘old, cramped and smelly.’

Children who read the highest number of books at the school will have the chance to win signed books by famous children’s authors - including signed photographs donated by cast members of Harry Potter.

The sponsored read, will encourage children’s love of learning over the summer holidays as well as help raise money for the school, headteacher Briony Roberston said.

“The sponsored read is such a great opportunity for pupils to focus on reading over the summer while helping us raise the money needed for the refurbishment.

“Our thanks go out to all the children’s authors, local companies and all the celebrities who have donated prizes to try and help us raise the money still needed.”

More than £5,000 of the £21,000 needed has already been raised from activities including the school summer fair.

However they still need to raise another £16,000 towards the project and are appealing for help from the community.
