WETHERBY in Bloom green fingered enthusiasts are working extra hard to put out the town’s famous hanging baskets in time for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The group’s chairman Geoff Humble told the Wetherby News how garden volunteers had brought forward their normal date - from early June to the end of May - to accommodate for the celebrations - at the request of the Town Council.

Geoff said: “We have been asked by the town council if we can get the hanging baskets up by the end of May so they are on display for this year’s Diamond Jubilee, which we are very much looking forward to.

“They have also asked us to try and coordinate the colours in red, white and blue for the occasion.”

Geoff says around 200 baskets will be put up by an army of volunteers above town shops and businesses in Wetherby.

The Wetherby in Bloom team are also asking for volunteers to help water the hanging basket flowers from June to mid September this year after a meeting this week showed there was a shortage of people available on the rota.

Geoff said: “We would ask any volunteers to please get in touch.

“We have had tremendous support from the people of Wetherby and it is a real community effort for the town.”
