Wetherby Morrisons’ 10,000ft sq expansion gets go-ahead

A controversial plan to expand Wetherby’s Morrisons has been approved by councillors today.

Leeds City Council’s North and East Plans Panel approved the scheme which will see an extension of the existing store by 10,000ft sq at the Hallfield Lane site.

The expansion will include the replacement of a number of shops within the Horsefair Centre, which include Barnados, Specsavers, Superdrug and the demolition of the Seven Oaks Sound and Vision store.

Morrisons also wants to increase parking spaces in Hallfield Lane lorry park by a further 144 spaces and make it free to use, with a mixture of long and short stay parking.

A coach drop off point, new customer cafe and entrance will also be provided.

A council report which recommended the proposals were given the go-ahead stated the scheme was “appropriate” to the town centre and the layout of the car park and associated works will “result in an improvement to the character and operation of Wetherby”.

The report also stated that the proposals will introduce “further investment and growth into the area as well as creating jobs through the construction process and its long term use”.

Planning was granted subject to a number of conditions including the resurfacing of Hallfield Lane lorry park before building work begins.

The pedestrianised shopping precinct is currently owned by the supermarket chain, who opened their store in Wetherby in 2002.
