Wetherby man dons cossie and pink frilly cap for 5k charity swim
A WETHERBY swimmer has completed a tough challenge in unusual style.
Lee Quickmire had vowed to swim 5km at Wetherby Leisure Centre is a woman’s costume and pink frilly cap if his friends and family sponsored him more than 2,000.
His keen supporters stumped up more than 2,300 – and Lee swallowed his pride to don the unusual outfit for the national swimathon in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.
But not everything went to plan on the day and Lee faced further challenges in the pool.
He said: “I tore my shoulder after 20 lengths, which meant I did the remaining 180 lengths single armed! I was in great pain, but completed the swim in one hour 40 minutes.”
The money he raised will go to Marie Curie, a charity he was inspired to support because so many people are affected by cancer and often need the help of a Marie Curie nurse.
The charity has an annual swimathon and, after 23 years, has raised more than 30million.
Its supporters have covered a distance equivalent to 24 times around the world.
