Wetherby fire drama

Waiting for Video...

Chaotic scenes hit Wetherby today as a fierce fire broke out above an electrical store on North Street.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at around 10.36 this morning to tackle flames at a flat above Bright Ideas electrical shop in the centre of the town.

Fire crews from Wetherby, Stanks and Tadcaster used hoses to tackle the fire, which is believed to have caused substantial smoke damage to windows and roof.

Eyewitness Roger Bealey, who was walking his dog down North Street at around the time the blaze started, told the News: “Smoke was billowing out of the windows.

“At first it was a bit chaotic as the road became blocked up and then the police came and closed off the road.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire Service described the fire as “well-alight” but confirmed nobody has been injured in the incident.

North Street, which was cordoned off by police, is now believed to have been re-opened.
