Wetherby Asda store plans revised

Asda’s plans for a new store in Wetherby have taken a step forward with the retailer submitting a planning application to Leeds City Council.

The planning submission follows extensive consultation with the local community last month to gauge the views of residents.

The Asda proposal is for a new reduced 25,000 sq ft (sales area) store, with a petrol filling station and around 350 car parking spaces, at a site on the A168 Hudson Way behind the Sandbeck Industrial Estate in Wetherby.

And the supermarket chain claims the new store is set to create over 200 new job opportunities for local people, while providing increased choice and competition for the town’s shoppers.

The new store would carry a full range of Asda products, including the Smart Price and ASDA lines, non-food range including CDs, DVDs, books, homeware and the award winning George clothing line.

Asda surveyed nearly 800 Wetherby residents and over 100 forms with 80 per cent in favour of the scheme.

ASDA’s Senior Property Communications Manager, Philip Bartram, said: “We have been delighted with the response from the local community so far.

“We are keen to progress our plans in Wetherby as quickly as is practical but it was important to fully consult with local people before formally submitting any plans to the Council.

“The public exhibition was only one strand of ongoing community consultation but the feedback received over the two days was extremely positive.”

He added: “It is important that any development in a town such as Wetherby fully takes into account its unique character.

“As much as it was made very clear to us that people would like to see a new Asda store in Wetherby, to increase choice and competition, just as many people have echoed our view that it has to be in the right place for the town.

“The proposed location is convenient - within easy reach of other shops and services - but will have no adverse effect on the historic town centre or local residents.”
