Visitors entertain youngsters with music at The Forest School

YOUNGSTERS from The Forest School in Knaresborough enjoyed a musical afternoon last week.

As part of a series of performances in the county’s special schools, the children enjoyed a visit from professional musicians, Emma Wilkins and Helen Macleod from NYMAZ (North Yorkshire’s Music Action Zone) and LMN (Live Music Now).

A number of musicians have been visiting schools across the county following a year-long programme during which each school has hosted three participatory performances.

Sally Adams, Music Co-ordinator at the school said: “"As an all-age special school, we appreciate and benefit from the fantastic performances we receive from Live Music Now every term.

“We recently enjoyed a flute and harp concert and pupils had the opportunity to participate in the live production. It is always wonderful as a teacher to see their reactions!"

Sessions include hands-on opportunities and activities such as trying and touching instruments, joining in with singing, clapping, body percussion, instruments and dancing, conducting the musicians, learning about the history and culture of each piece of music, a question and answer session and musical games.

In total, more than 600 children and young people across the county who have special educationalneeds have benefited from the performances.

The project’s aims include providing the youngsters with high quality music, helping them engage in composition and other musical activities which they would not normally be able to access, and increasing their musical skills and knowledge.
