Villages to benefit from new grants
TWO parish councils in villages near Wetherby have been given almost £4,000 by Leeds City Council to spend on community projects.
Collingham with Linton Parish Council has been awarded 935 to provide 22 hanging baskets and four hayracks in the village to enhance its already picturesque appearance.
Bardsey Parish Council is to receive 3,000 towards the restoration of the West Well - a unique 200 year old well which was used for filling horse-drawn water bowsers to supply local farms and their livestock with water during the dry summer months.
The money will pay for stone repairs around the well and a landscaped area with seating to provide a pleasant resting place for walkers.
Harewood councillor Alec Shelbrooke said “My ward colleagues and I are fully committed to providing funding to vital local organisations such as the parish councils and I am delighted that we have been able to provide this money for these projects.
Fellow Harewood councillor Rachael Procter added: “Bardsey, though a small village, has got a long history stretching back to mediaeval Britain and beyond, so I’m pleased that we can help safeguard this heritage for future generations by contributing to the restoration of the village’s unique well.”
Councillor Ann Castle (Conservative, Harewood ward) concluded: “It’s great news that we have been able to give the funds for these projects. The hanging baskets will mean that Collingham and Linton will look fantastic this year, ablaze with a riot of colour.”
