Views expressed by Scholes residents at a public meeting on Tuesday (February 21) could prove significant in their upcoming battle to retain the rural identity of their village.
Just weeks ago the Wetherby News revealed outline plans to build up to 3,500 new homes on land close to the village, some of it now protected by the Green Belt.
At Tuesday’s public meeting, taking place at the Manor House community centre in Belle Vue Road, Scholes, at 7pm, residents will be given details of a Conservation Area which Leeds City Council intends to designate in the oldest parts of the village.
Initially the plan did not include the Coronation Tree, a popular landmark at one end of the village. But protests from residents persuaded the city council’s Senior Conservation Officer to amend the draft to include the historic tree and the landscaped traffic island on which it stands.
“These proposals will help safeguard the buildings, architecture and character which makes Scholes special and preserve it for future generations,” said Coun Richard Lewis, the city council’s executive board member for economy and development.
Scholes residents are likely to be joined at Tuesday’s meeting by people from neighbouring Barwick keen to discuss city council plans to impose a Traffic Regulation Order in the parish.
The city council also plans to fit a lockable gate at the far end of Rakehill Road, Scholes.
