Village chosen to bloom for county
Barwick-in-Elmet has been chosen to represent Yorkshire in the large village category of this year’s Britain in Bloom competition at the request of Yorkshire in Bloom, the Wetherby News can reveal.
The village’s In Bloom team has been advised by the Royal Horticultural Society, organisers of the prestigious contest, that it has accepted Yorkshire in Bloom’s proposal.
Barwick is no stranger to the national event, having won Gold in the same category in 2009, though representing the whole of Yorkshire puts enormous pressure on the volunteer team and, to a lesser degree, on all residents of the village.
Says Geoff Yapp, a committee member at Barwick in Bloom: “We did a lot of ‘soul searching’ before agreeing to this in view of the extra effort involved but decided that the honour should not be passed up. We will be aiming for another Gold.”
Britain in Bloom judges will visit Barwick during August as part of their nationwide tour of large villages representing their counties.
