VIDEO - “Insanity” challenge for Channing

Soldiers from the 21 Engineers’ 73 Squadron have paid tribute to a much-loved comrade who was killed in Afghanistan in September 2012.

Army medic Cpl Channing Day was based at Ripon’s Claro Barracks before she was posted to Afghanistan.

Now her old friends from the city’s 21 Engineer Regiment have completed a charity challenge with a with a 50 hour gruelling workout session to honour her memory. A team of 10 took it in turns to complete all 50 hours of the tough “Insanity” fitness programme while collecting donations for Combat Stress.

Organiser Sgt Jody Mardling was good friends with Channing.

She said: “Channing was a little star. She was based with us in Ripon when we got back from our last tour in Afghanistan in 2010.”

Last year, Channing had helped some of the 21 Engineers complete a Coast-to-Coast walk, which raised £10,000 for Combat Stress, so her friends decided to support a charity already close to Channing’s heart, she added.

Sgt Mardling paid tribute to the support they have seen. “It has been great, and it’s made us realise how much people care. Some people have given money for Channing, some people have given because they support the charity, and all our friends and family have given money to support us doing the challenge.”

So far the group have raised more than £2000 through an online giving page and with collection buckets outside Camp Bastion’s cookhouses.
