An igloo built on Harrogate’s Stray has raised more than £2500 for a cancer charity in just three days.

Three times cancer survivor Craig Parker, 31, and his friends hit the headlines with their eye catching way of raising money for Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Craig, brothers Carl and Greg Baranovsky and brothers Mark and Tom Davies spent their “snow day” building the igloo on Monday, and then decided to try auctioning their work.

They put the ice structure on Ebay, and bids reached £571 by the time the auction ended on Thursday evening when Harrogate businessman David Pitts placed the winning bid.

Davis said he decided to try to buy the igloo after spotting it on The Stray and on Rightmove property website with his son Ben.

He added: “When we found out it was for Yorkshire Cancer Research we couldn’t resist putting in a bid – my father in law died of this horrible disease late last year.

“I’d like to thank the guys for all their hard work in building the igloo – such a great idea and worthwhile cause.”

The friends first thought about listing their igloo on Ebay for fun, Craig said, before deciding they would auction it for charity.

“I’ve had cancer three times, and we’ve all been touched by cancer in some way, so we decided on Yorkshire Cancer Research.”

“We thought that between all our friends and family we might get up to £100,” Craig added, but only three hours after a starting bid of 99p the price has risen to £104.

They also set up an online giving page after receiving dozens of messages from well wishers who couldn’t afford to bid on the igloo but wanted to show their support, and it has so far raised more than £1,900.

“We are all just amazed at how much it has raised,” Craig added.

“We did it just fun because we had a snow day.”
