Twins conquer ambition to fly solo

Twin brothers Alex and Owen Jackson, aged 16 from 35 (Wetherby) Squadron Air Cadets, have achieved their lifelong ambition to fly solo.

Twin brothers Alex and Owen Jackson have achieved their lifelong ambition to fly solo.

The 16-year-olds from Spofforth, who have attended 35 (Wetherby) Squadron Air Cadets since they were 13, underwent 10 hours of tuition in the RAF Vigilant Motor Glider through the Gliding Scholarship Scheme to accomplish their goal.

Gliding School Commanding Officer, Simon Johnston, said: “Alex and Owen carried out excellent solos in near perfect conditions and receive their silver wings.”

He joked: “Not entirely sure if they both went solo, maybe one of them went twice.”

Alex and Owen attend St John Fisher School in Harrogate and hold the rank of Corporal.

Wetherby Commanding Officer Peter Carrington said: “Alex and Owen are fantastic cadets and have achieved everything together through their hard work and determination.

“Flying solo is a huge achievement and we are all proud of them.”

The Cadets meet on Monday and Thursdays, 7.30-9.30pm at Pegasus House, Barleyfields Road.
