Town goes for gold with Mediterranean garden
A DULL grassy area in Knaresborough has been transformed into an exotic Mediterranean garden thanks to the hard work of the volunteers from Knaresborough in Bloom.
Following a grant from the Lottery’s Awards for All, the top of Park Row near Manor Road has been converted into an interesting and attractive garden.
In Bloom volunteer Penny Carpenter found the grassed area and envisaged it as a Mediterranean garden.
As the land belongs to Harrogate Council, permission was sought from it before a design could be drawn up and the work could take place.
It is complete with large rocks and gravel scree – giving a backdrop to unusual plants – and, as spring progresses, more plants will grow and add to the variety. Already planted is a palm tree, a Trachycarpus fortunei, followed by grasses, cordylines and various yucca. Buds just showing through are sedum and hosta.
“It certainly attracts interest from people walking past and from drivers stuck in the traffic jam,” said Penny.
Knaresborough is hoping to move up to ‘Gold’ standard in the annual Yorkshire in Bloom competition this year.
Knaresborough in Bloom chair Coun Christine Willoughby said: “We want to move up from our ‘Silver Gilt’ award from Yorkshire in Bloom in the ‘small town' category and this garden created by our volunteers is just what the judges like.
“Thank you to our volunteers – Penny Carpenter, Andrew Willoughby, Sheila Lund, Valerie Kaye, Dennis Houseman and Peter Guest for all their hard work,”
The committee would also like to thank the following – Big Lottery Awards For All for funding, stones from Sam Cryer, Bishop Thornton, gravel from Travis Perkins, Knaresborough and plants from Johnson's of Whixley and Daleside Nurseries, Killinghall.
