Touch of local history brought to popular gala

HUNDREDS of people visited Tockwith Primary School Gala for a fun-packed day of entertainment despite the rain.

The event on Saturday was opened by the Sealed Knot, a war re-enactment group, who fired muskets and canons.

The group will march from Tockwith to Marston Moor next week to commemorate the 1644 Battle of Marston Moor.

Joe Wiggett, chairman for Tockwith Primary PTA, said: “It was quite nice to have them involved considering it’s part of our history. The children really enjoyed it.”

Visitors enjoyed a variety of stalls and competitions, including two raffles featuring prizes such as Leeds Carnegie tickets, a signed Leeds United poster and weekend hotel breaks.

There was also a mixture of food and drink on offer, including homemade cakes and a cask of real ale, which was given to the gala at cost by Rudgate Brewery.

All the money raised at the event will go towards Tockwith Primary PTA funds for an all weather playground shelter and new Key Stage 2 playground equipment.

Activities throughout the day kept people in high spirits with lots of demonstrations on offer from various after-school clubs attended by pupils.

They included Lynn Brew’s Tockwith School of Linedancing, a display from Jamie Bell’s Fusion Dance and Fitness, Felicity McCullen’s Tockwith Gymnastics Club and the Tockwith School of Dance.

A school Year 5 and 6 football tournament, which was won by Tockwith Primary, was also held and there was a Karate demonstration by Martial Arts for Life, Harrogate. The Tockwith Players also performed.

The Tockwith Terrific Tasty Cup, which is awarded to the best and tastiest cake, was won by Amanda Shackell in the adult section and Freya Lumley in the junior section. The competition was judged by Reverend Ray Shaw.

Ms Wiggett said: “Despite the weather, the children kept chipper. It helped having lots of displays throughout the day, which kept people entertained. It was good fun and there was a positive atmosphere despite the weather.

“It was disappointing it did rain but made a good amount of money and everybody had a good time, which is what we were aiming for at the end of the day.

“I would like to say a big thankyou to vice chairmen of the PTA, Cath Tunnard and Ruth McHenerey, treasurer, Bridget Rose, advertiser Clare Reeder and personal shopper Elisa Milnes, for all their help with the event.”
