Time for action on the shabby state of buildings

THE sorry state of one of the main entrances to Knaresborough is now becoming a cause of great concern.

Approaching Knaresborough from Harrogate down the hill towards High Bridge and the Waterside area, visitors to our town are confronted with dilapidated and derelict buildings in an area that was once an eye-catching and vibrant corner of the town.

With Easter and the summer months right around the corner, thousands of visitors will soon be descending on Knaresborough and if they're parking in the Conyngham Hall/Riverside car park area and walking along the river towards the town, then it's a pretty abysmal scene for them.

Local councillors are tackling Harrogate Borough Council to do something about the now empty former Yorkshire Lass pub and the former Blenkhorns Cafe on the opposite bank of the river, also empty, to see if the owners can at least be made to tidy them up and maintain the properties to a reasonable standard.

As mentioned at the annual town meeting earlier this month, there's also an awful lot of properties on the High Street, now empty and shabby, creating a poor and uncaring impression on visitors, not to mention the residents.

A number of these property owners live elsewhere and it seems, care little what state these buildings fall into. But more and more people are commenting on them, and it would seem it's now high time for Harrogate Borough Council's Planning Enforcement Section to step in, overcome their reluctance and take the necessary action to get these places tidied up – and quickly!
