A talented young musician from Bardsey has hit all the right notes to pull off an unusual treble, singing her way to her third Grade 8 music examination with top marks.

Isobel Rose, a Lower Sixth student at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), has passed her singing exam with distinction, which requires a minimum score of 130 points out of 150.

The 17-year-old already holds two Grade 8 qualifications - the highest of the graded music examinations - having passed on cello in 2010 and on piano in 2012 – also with distinction.

Isobel said: “I’ve always sung in the school choir but never had any singing lessons until last September.

“As well as preparing for my Grade 8, the lessons have been good for my general musical training; I like to be able to turn my hand to anything!”

While Isabel has only been studying for a few months with singing teacher Andrew Padmore, she started her instrumental training much earlier; cello with Jean Maslin at the age of seven, and piano at the age of nine, now studying with Mark Fitton.

Proud mum Sally Rose said: “Isobel has worked so hard for so long, and the support of the music staff at GSAL has been fantastic over the years.

“There are many performance opportunities at school and excellent facilities for practice which have helped her raise her level for the exams.”

Isobel hopes to study music at university following her A levels next year.

For now she has her sights set on a fourth Grade 8 – in music theory – and performs regularly with a variety of school ensembles and as a cellist with the City of Leeds Youth Orchestra.

Together with her quartet ‘No Strings Detached’ whose members are fellow students, she won the ‘String duet, trio or quartet’ class at last weekend’s Harrogate Competitive Festival for Music, Speech and Drama.
