Teenager's malicious wounding charges

A TEENAGER is facing trial on two counts of unlawful and malicious wounding after incidents in the market town three weeks apart.

Ryan George McMillan, 19, from Knaresborough, appeared in custody before magistrates in Harrogate accused of wounding Daniel Broadbent, who had his cheek fractured by a punch in the High Street on January 17.

McMillan, an electronics company worker, of Park Row, Knaresborough, is also charged with wounding Jamie Terrence Middleton, who was struck in the face when a pint glass was thrown in a High Street pub's garden - which severed an artery and damaged nerves which control his top lip and left eye - on February 7.

McMillan did not enter a plea to either charge and prosecutor Sam Rogers said the Crown Prosecution Service considered the matters too serious to remain in magistrates' jurisdiction. Defence solicitor Geoffrey Rogers made no representations on venue and court chairman David Gravells ruled the hearing should be in front of a judge and jury.

Onerous condition

Miss Rogers opposed bail for McMillan, claiming he would be likely to commit further offences if at liberty and might also fail to surrender to the court. But defence solicitor Geoffrey Rogers contended McMillan's roots were in Knaresborough so he was unlikely to leave the town. He lived with his mother and her partner and his job was still open to him. Any worries could be met by bail conditions.

After a lengthy retirement Mr Gravells said bail would be allowed with ''onerous conditions.''

McMillan, who will return to court on April 8 when the case is expected to be committed to York Crown Court, must continue to live at his present address and abide by an electronically-tagged curfew there between 8pm and 6am nightly.

He must also report to Harrogate police station every day between 6pm and 7pm and is not to enter any licensed premises, or be found drunk in a public place. And he must not communicate with or interfere in any way with the complainants in the two charges.
