Targeted patrols pay off with driver arrests

Inspector Andy Chapman reports on the latest updates from the local team:

Driver Behaviour - We have conducted high-visibility targeted patrols on the major routes and the locations identified by the community. This has resulted in two persons arrested for drink-driving and 12 Fixed Penalty Notices have been issued for driving offences.

December saw the launch of the Christmas Drink-Drive Campaign; as a result, the team will continue to target offending motorists and ensure safety for road users.

A young drivers event was held at St James Retail Park in November, which was a multi-agency operation involving Police and the Fire Service. The initiative was well attended and enabled road safety advice to be passed on to a number of young drivers.

Antisocial Behaviour - High-visibility mobile and foot patrols continue to be deployed throughout the hotspot areas in Knaresborough, targeting anti-social behaviour.

In the last three months, officers have seized 60 bottles of alcoholic drink from juveniles. Reports of youth anti-social behaviour have been followed up by visits to parents, reinforcing the message that this type of behaviour is unacceptable.

Pubwatch - We are holding monthly Pubwatch meetings with the licensees of pubs and clubs in Knaresborough. Any individuals noted for anti-social or criminal behaviour on licensed premises are served with a banning notice. Currently, there are six people banned from the town’s pubs.

Business Watch - This operated successfully in 2009 on St James Retail Park. The scheme was designed to encourage better communications between businesses and the police and to alert them to any incidents affecting them. The success of the scheme has led to the setting up of another Business Watch for companies on Manse Lane.

Shopwatch - Shopwatch is due to be expanded with a new digital service being introduced, allowing 24/7 communications with CCTV and the Police.

Neighbourhood Watch - The scheme continues to grow and is an invaluable tool in our fight against crime. New schemes have recently been set up on the Eastfield estate in response to a crime prevention operation conducted by our team. Should you wish to be involved in a Neighbourhood Watch scheme, please contact us.

Farmwatch - This has been set up and allows members to communicate with each other and the police in order to share information. There are more than 100 members and information received through the scheme has assisted in the prosecution of a number of poachers.

Churchwatch - This has recently been set up to allow the police quick and effective communication with all places of worship in response to thefts and other incidents.

Internet - Our programme of educating children on the dangers of using the internet has continued at local primary and secondary schools.

This has also included talks to parents about protecting children.

The input has so far been given to over 1,500 children and 100 parents in the area promoting staying safe whilst online.

How to Contact Us - There will be opportunities to meet the team at a range of events across the area this year.

l The next Safer Neighbourhood Team meeting to which members of the public are welcome to attend will be on Tuesday, March 16 at 7pm at King James’s School.
