Tadcaster swimming pool wins royal award

Tadcaster Community Swimming Pool Trust has been given a royal seal of approval.

The Westgate-based facility, which has 108 volunteers and 20 paid staff, has been awarded the Duke of York Community Initiative Award for 2012.

Facility manager Chris Porter said: “This is a massive achievement for the trust and for Tadcaster.

“Our staff and volunteers are so proud of what we have achieved.” Mr Porter explained that the pool, which is run as a charitable trust, was assessed by two Trustees of the Duke of York CIA who looked for evidence of community benefit, diversity, inclusiveness, collaboration and teamwork with emphasis on the input from volunteers within the community.

“Throughout the half day assessment, the assessors met and chatted to staff, volunteers and customers using the facility,” added Mr Porter. “It was quite stringent and they had really strict criteria. We are the only swimming pool to have won the award.”

The award, pictured avbove, was handed over by the Lord Lieutenant of East Riding the Honourable Susan Cunliffe-Lister who stood in for a fog-bound Duke of York.

“Unfortunately HRH Duke of York was unable to attend due to foggy weather conditions in the south of England,” added Mr Porter.

“All awards winners were later invited to meet him in December at the Merchant Taylors Hall in York.

“We had a chat with him about health and fitness which he is interested in.”

Tadcaster Swimming Pool Trust will hold the award, which is presented to community projects based in Yorkshire, for five years.
