Tadcaster split in two after deluge forces bridge closure
Flooding struck this week and left the area counting the cost.
Early yesterday morning the Wharfe burst its banks flooding the Wilderness carpark in Wetherby and in Tadcaster the main bridge was closed amid concerns about its structural safety.
Highways bosses closed the A659 through Tadcaster, splitting the town in two after concerns about the safety of the bridge structure in the centre as fire crews from York and Tadcaster were called to the site.
Melvin Pratt, 47, partner of nearby Calcaria Carpets said on Wednesday morning, part of his store was flooded.
“We have moved stock up to the warehouse.
“The water has come in 10 to 20 feet, covering the flooring but it is not as bad as 2000 when it went all through the shop.
“We are just waiting and hoping it does not rise any more.”
