Residents of a close knit community are celebrating after winning a national gardening competition.

Spofforth in Bloom scooped Gold and Category winner for best village in the RHS Britain in Bloom competition at the weekend.

Five volunteers of Spofforth in Bloom, including chairman John Stanley, made the trip to St Peter Port, in Guernsey, where the awards ceremony was held to collect the prestigious prize.

In total, more than 400 people attended the award show hosted by television presenter and BBC One Show host Matt Baker.

John told the News this week of the group’s delight at winning the award.

“Everyone in Spofforth is absolutely thrilled to have won the village category of the RHS Britain in Bloom National finals,” he said.

“It means so much to everybody in the community who have put in so much work to make our village a more beautiful, greener and cleaner place to live. The award is a truly wonderful reward for all our hard work.

“I’m so proud of all the community who helped in enabling us to showcase our village in this prestigious horticultural campaign.”

John added: “Britain in Bloom is simply all about people and community.

“People coming together to make their home a better place to live, and I am overwhelmed that our community was acknowledged in this way.”

The Spofforth in Bloom group, which was set up in 1985, has around 30 volunteers.

RHS Britain in Bloom UK judging Panel chairman, Roger Burnett said the Spofforth in Bloom team had excelled in all areas.

He said: “As a first-time RHS Britain in Bloom UK Finalist, the North Yorkshire village of Spofforth has in one stroke achieved the highest accolade possible.

“Despite being situated on a very busy main road, this rural village has embraced all the guiding principles of the campaign and excelled in all areas.”

More than 1,200 UK communities participate each year in the campaign, and just 72 finalists were chosen to represent their area in the national awards where communities are marked in three areas: horticultural achievement, community participation and environmental responsibility.
